Responsible Nanotechnology: Opportunities in Construction for the Poor

Allana Haist is co-founder and Vice President of SabryCorp Ltd. for Science and Development, the first nanotechnology consultancy company in the Middle East and Africa. Along with co-founder Mohamed Abdel- Mottaleb, she co-organized the first international nanotechnology conference in the Arab world in 2005 in Luxor, NanoTech Insight, and its subsequent editions in 2007 (Luxor) and 2009 (Barcelona). She is the initiator of SabryCorp’s in2nano program, which aims at raising public awareness of the risks and benefits nanotechnology, with a focus on promoting scientific literacy amongst high school students. Ms. Haist has recently responded to an invitation by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG for Food and Development) in the UK Parliament to present evidence on the UK Parliamentary Inquiry into Global Food Security.


Ms. Haist received her M.A. in Applied Ethics (Magna Cum Laude) from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and and Honours B.A. in Humanities from Carleton University in Canada. She is currently a PhD candidate in Political Science at the Technical University of Chemnitz in Germany. Ms. Haist's research interests are on the ethical and political considerations of disruptive technologies and their impact on development.


In her previous work, Ms. Haist served as Assistant Editor at the Center for Economic Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels.
